East Stroudsburg, PA: Colleges

One of the most distinguished colleges in East Stroudsburg is the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. It is classified as a public university and one of the fourteen state universities that make up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education or PASSHE. The faculty, administration, and students fondly called the school as ESU.
The university began as a preparatory school for teachers in 1893. It was then called as the East Stroudsburg Normal School. At that time, it was still a private school. After a while, the ownership was transferred to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This took place in 1920. This was the moment the name was changed to East Stroudsburg State Normal School. By 1927, the right to confer the degrees of Bachelor of Science in health education and education was granted. Later, the name was changed to East Stroudsburg State Teachers College. In the year 1960, there were additional curricula added and then the name was again changed to East Stroudsburg State College.

School Address

This university is located in the borough of East Stroudsburg PA, or in the Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania. It literally caters to every resident in the Leigh Valley region. It is about forty five minutes away, southeast of the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre area. It is also forty minutes north of Allentown. Meanwhile, the New Jersey border is just two miles away, seventy miles from New York City, and about ninety miles from Philadelphia.

The nearby borough of Stroudsburg is the cultural center and seat of Monroe County. The school is conveniently accessible from Interstate 80, PA Route 33, and U.S. Route 209. Also, the Pocono Medical Center, which by the way is the main medical center in the borough and nearby areas, is located near the campus.

There are currently 62 campus buildings located on a little over 200 acres of land. There are also various academic facilities, seven residence halls, and a 1,000-seat dining hall. They are all located on campus. Meanwhile, the Student Union also has a “center court.” It’s more like a cafeteria type of dining where there are several made-to-order meals. There’s also Java City. It’s a coffee shop owned by the Student Union, offering all sorts of beverages except alcoholic varieties. There’s also a bakery.

Academic Profile

Today, East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is offering 68 undergraduate major programs with 24 different concentrations. Currently, the largest in terms of enrolment are Health and Physical Education K-12, Biological Sciences, Elementary Education, Computer Science, Business Management, Secondary Education, and Psychology. The school also added majors in Health Services Administration and Industrial Physics just recently. There are also several graduate study programs. One of the perks of studying in this university is the student to professor ratio, which currently stands at 19:1. 56% of the students are female while 44% are male. There are also 24% of students coming from outside Pennsylvania and a little over 1% comes from different countries.
